In a fast-paced, high scoring charity exhibition game drubbing of Josh Pastner’s Georgia Tech team, there was one player in particular that stood out to many Tide faithful. Combo-Guard Jaden Shackelford poured in a game high 21 points on 6-10 shooting from 3pt range while also managing to convert three of his four opportunities at the free throw line. Shackelford, a 6’3, 195LBS Freshman from Hesperia, CA, arrived in Tuscaloosa over the summer and has garnered the attention of his superiors and teammates ever since.
“This is my 7th year in Division I basketball, and he’s as ready to play Division I basketball as any freshman I think I’ve ever coached.”, said Crimson Tide Head Coach Nate Oats over the fall. “I anticipate him being a major factor. I love coaching the kid every day.”
Backcourt counterpart and star PG Kira Lewis Jr. had supporting words regarding Shackelford's play vs. GT in today's press-conference. “It just shows the type of player he is. He doesn’t back down from any competition, he just comes in and does his job and does it to the best of his abilities. And he played a great game today.”
After accumulating a team 2nd best 25.07% usage rate in today’s game, Alabama fans can expect to see a lot more from the star Freshman who certainly doesn’t lack confidence in pulling up from beyond the arc. “I just felt confident from the jump, straight out the gate. Missing a shot doesn’t really affect me that much. My guys just keep me tuned into shooting the same shot the next time, so after I made the first one I just continued to be confident with every other one I shot.”
A singular quote from Georgia Tech Head Coach Josh Pastner summarizes Shackelford’s ability perfectly:
“Jaden Shackelford, for crying out loud.”
