Every college basketball team wants to be playing their best basketball come March. Nate Oats specifically mentioned that earlier in the season. Luckily for Alabama, they’re doing just that as they’re coming off of a huge win over #25 LSU at home. The Tide are now sitting at 14-11 (6-6) with a big game against Buzz Williams’ Texas A&M Aggies on Wednesday night. If Alabama wants to make the NCAA tourney in Nate Oats first season, they have to win this one (and most of their remaining games).
On paper, Alabama is the better team, and they opened as an 11.5 point favorite. Alabama is the 2nd highest scoring team in the country at 83.2 PPG while A&M is ranked 340th with 61.2 PPG according to TeamRankings. Alabama shoots very well overall (44%) and from 3 (35.1%). A&M does not shoot it well at all as they shoot 38.8% overall and only 26% from 3. Alabama is the better rebounding team overall, especially defensively, as they average almost 6 more total rebounds per game. When you look at Alabama’s fast pace and possessions per game (almost 13 more possessions per game than A&M), along with their ability to rebound, it’s hard to see them losing this game unless they just come out flat like they’ve done in years past.
Players to Watch:
F Josh Nebo (11.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG)
G Savion Flagg (9.7 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 2.5 APG)
G Wendell Mitchell (8.6 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 1.5 APG)
F Emmanuel Miller (6.8 PPG, 6.6 RPG)
Alabama knows what’s at stake on Wednesday. This is a must win game for their NCAA tourney hopes. Nate Oats will have this team ready to go from the start and they’ll win this game behind a hot shooting performance from John Petty and Kira Lewis.
