Alabama-Richmond Preview

Alabama-Richmond Preview Alabama (6-5) vs. Richmond (10-2) 5:30 PM C.T., December 29th Coleman Coliseum, Tuscaloosa, Alabama Available to watch on SEC Network; Listen on The Crimson Tide Sports Network Alabama went into the Christmas Break winning 4 of their last 5 games, where their only loss was to a Top 25 team in Penn State. The team is currently playing their best ball, with the players seeming to buy in to Coach Nate Oats’ system. The team is coming off a 92-72 victory against Belmont in Huntsville, where John Petty continued his hot streak, putting up 14 points and 11 rebounds, with Kira Lewis Jr putting up 15 points, 7 rebounds and 8 assists. The team is facing a difficult challenge Sunday with the 10-2 Richmond Spiders coming into town. The outside shooting has been the focal point of the offense to this point in the season, but this is a Richmond team that is probably one of the most defensively sound teams in the country right now, only allowing opponents to shoot 31% from beyond the arc this season, and 67 PPG. Players like Javian Davis (8.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG) and Alex Reese (9.2 PPG, and 4.8 RPG) are going to have to step up inside the paint and apply pressure on their bigs. Junior guard Blake Francis is going to be tough to guard, as he is their best shooter, shooting 41% from behind the 3-point line and 81% from the line. While Alabama has the better offense, the Tide is allowing opponents to score 77 PPG, which ranks 325th out of 351st in the nation. Turnovers will also play a key part in this game, with both teams coughing up the ball a lot. Key Players to Watch: Junior Guard Blake Francis - 18.2 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 2.9 APG Junior Guard Jacob Gilyard - 14.8 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 6.3 APG Junior Forward Grant Golden - 12.5 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 2.8 APG Prediction Alabama has been a hot team lately, and has been playing some really good ball. Bama’s defense is a concern, so Richmond will get their fair share of points throughout the game, but with Kira Lewis Jr and John Petty Jr leading the charge on offense they will be able to answer back. I also expect a huge game from Junior Herbert Jones. While Richmond is very solid on the defensive end, I don’t think they have enough firepower on offense to stop the Tide. I expect the Tide to win this one. Alabama 81 Richmond 74
